Discovered that my palace stands upon pillars of salt

I know it’s been a while since my last post, and for some of that time there isn’t really a good enough excuse for that, but recently there has been.  I once again couldn’t find my camera lead!  I searched everywhere and even bought a new one (it was HD so I thought that would justify it as it was different…) but that didn’t work even though it plugged in fine…  It took me until then to even think to check if my laptop had a place to insert a card from a camera.  It does.  So now I have the pictures available to illustrate the posts I’d been wanting to do.

I decided to change the design of my blog mostly because I didn’t like the font size on my previous one, but couldn’t find a way to change that without making the photos too small…  It took me a while to chose this theme as there are lots of really nice ones, but I thought it was a good mix of girly and geeky…

Viva La Vida by Coldplay may seem a strange choice of title-source at first, but it is, in fact, relevant.  You see, this post is about a jaunt I had with my family recently to Falkland.

For those of you who don’t know, Falkland has a Palace in it, which among other things was the place where James V died while thinking that his dynasty was over as his wife had just given birth to a daughter instead of a son.   This is where the whole depressed former king theme of the song is appropriate (and why I substituted the world ‘palace’ for the original ‘castles’).

Another feature of any of my family’s visits to Falkland is a stop-off at The Pillars of Hercules just outside the town.  It’s a hippy place which grows and sells organic food and also has a health-food-shop-y bit and a cafe which, while not exclusively Vegan, serves Vegan food.  The name of the place is, as you may have figured out by now, why I chose the part of the song that mentions ‘pillars’…

I hope to use song quotations for blog-post titles in the future as I’ve seen lots of great blogs do this and always enjoy it.  I just thought that, as with the ‘Coffee and Tetralogy’ post, I would give a bit of insight into the strange connections that my mind makes between song lyrics and other things…

I know I should have included a photo of the entrance sign to Pillars (as we affectionately abbreviate the name to) and probably some of the shop and cafe, too.  But I’m afraid I was too busy being preoccupied with my aforementioned interest in taking pictures of cute animals!  There are always a LOT of cute dogs there!

Image

First of all there is this adorable young Westie who was being a cute little scamp at the table across from us while we were eating.  Unfortunately, I can’t remember her name now, but I do remember that she was still just a puppy!

And this is Huey, in the only clear picture I managed to take of him – the rest of the time he was too busy leaping up at me and my brother to bother with sitting still!  He was a supposedly grown-up dog, but didn’t seem to have noticed that, yet!  Although he is the only one that I currently have photographic evidence off, Fife (where Falkland is situated) seems to be FULL of spaniels!

And once again, we shift naturally and easily from real animals to fake ones!  This is the fountain in Falkland, complete with lions both guarding it and providing the water…

Image

And across from them is a different kind of fake animal – a statue of a human…

This is Onesiphorous Tyndall Bruce.  I had to take a picture of him, because we always notice him when we visit.  Mostly, I admit, because of his impressively grandiose name!  You have to wonder what he was called as a pet name…  Tyndall, perhaps?

I love outside steps, and they are almost as frequently seen in Fife as Spaniels are!

And I had to include this picture, though its a different theme from the others because… polka dots!

That’s all for now, but hopefully it won’t be nearly as long before my next post!  At least if I forget about the fact that I can upload my pictures straight from the card, it’s written here in my post and that should help to remind me!
